Does UPS Drug Test?

Does UPS Drug Test? Here’s What I Discovered After Calling Over a Dozen UPS Locations Across the US and Canada!

Curious about UPS’s drug testing policy? Well, I was too! So, I embarked on a quest to find out if UPS conducts drug tests on its employees, both in Canada and the United States. The answer I uncovered? Well, it’s not as simple as a yes or no. Let me break it down for you, country by country.

Canada: No Drug Testing Buzz

When I reached out to UPS locations across Canada, I received some consistent feedback. The representatives I spoke to either stated that they were

The US: A Mixed Bag of Responses

Across the United States, I encountered a more diverse range of responses. The majority of the UPS locations I contacted were

Additional Insights Worth Noting

Now, let’s delve a bit deeper. Here are some additional insights into UPS’s drug testing policies:

According to the UPS Code of Business Conduct, UPS sets forth standards of conduct for all of its employees and representatives, including suppliers, consultants, and third-party representatives. Adherence to the Code is required of all employees and representatives of UPS.

UPS’s drug testing policy appears to vary depending on the position and location. For example, one source states that drivers are required to obtain a DOT physical with a drug test. Another source states that UPS does not do pre-employment drug testing for most positions, but it does for drivers.

Random drug testing can occur, especially in safety-sensitive positions like drivers and heavy machinery operators. The frequency and scope of these tests can vary. After a workplace accident or incident, there’s an increased likelihood of drug testing taking place. If an employee is involved in a workplace incident or violates the company’s drug and alcohol policy, they may need to undergo drug testing before being allowed to return to work 6.

UPS usually contracts with third-party vendors to conduct drug tests. These vendors follow established guidelines and procedures to ensure accuracy and fairness.

Remember, these are generalities, and drug testing policies can vary by country, region, specific job roles within the company, and even the state’s political leaning. For the most accurate and up-to-date information, I recommend checking UPS’s official website and any recently published employee handbooks or policy documents.

Companies That Don’t Drug Test – Updated 2024

Here is a list of companies that don’t drug test 2023!

If you are looking for a job that doesn’t require you to pass a drug test, you might be surprised by how many options you have. Many big companies in various industries have relaxed their drug testing policies or don’t have one at all. Here are some examples of companies that don’t drug test employees, according to different sources:

  • Tech giants like MicrosoftNetflix, and Amazon are among the companies that don’t drug test their workers, unless they are in safety-sensitive positions or required by law1.
  • Fast-food chains like ChipotleStarbucks, and McDonald’s also don’t require drug testing for most of their employees, except for managers or drivers2,3.
  • Retail stores like CostcoBest Buy, and Target are also on the list of companies that don’t drug test, as they focus more on customer service and performance than on personal habits2,3.
  • Other companies that don’t drug test include media and entertainment firms like The New York Times and Disney, as well as professional services firms like Deloitte and PwC1.
  • Surprisingly, many government positions, including federal, state, and municipal, do not drug test. Such positions you can expect to not be drug tested for include biologists, administrative, research scientists, field technicians, surveying, communications, and engineers. Despite not drug testing in most cases, hiring processes are generally much more rigorous.

Of course, these policies may vary depending on the location, position, and circumstances of each company and employee. Some companies may conduct random or post-accident drug testing, while others may only test for certain substances. It is always advisable to check the company’s official policy before applying or accepting a job offer.

Does Walmart Drug Test? We called to find out! (updated July 2024)

I Called Over 25 Walmart Stores Across the US and Canada – Here is What I Found!

Find Out Does Walmart Drug Test

Well the answer is…. IT DEPENDS!!!

Here is what we found broken down by country and state!

US

Regarding our calls to US Walmart stores, there was a greater mix of responses, but…

  • The VAST MAJORITY were not aware of any ongoing drug test requirements for either new hires or active employees; however
  • One store did confirm that they do drug testing, but depending on which department you wanted to work in.
  • In general, it sounded like most departments don’t require testing, but some stores noted that drivers (e.g. fork lift operators, delivery drivers, etc.), heavy machinery operators, pharmacy, and/or vision center services employees may require testing (but did not specify if the tests occur at time of hire or if it would be random drug testing at a later date).

Specific states/cities we called:

We called Walmarts across a bunch of states, including Colorado, Texas, New York, Massachusetts, Washington, Florida, Oklahoma, Illinois, Michigan, and California. When dialing in, we call various departments, but tried to speak with human resources where possible so as to get the most reliable and detailed information.

RECENT UPDATES:

On July 4, 2024 we called a bunch more of stores in the following states to make sure that the above info was still valid and up to date:

  • Does Walmart drug test in Oklahoma: We called a few stores, which included Oklahoma City. The answer was actually YES, from one location. They said they test all departments at the start, and periodically throughout employment. Another Walmart in Oklahoma said they they all only drug test people applying for positions that operate heavy machinery.
  • Does Walmart drug test in Illinois: We called a few stores, which included Springfield and St. Louis. The answers were mixed. One store said they test all departments (but this was coming from a pharmacy employee). I called another store and the woman emphatically said no, they don’t drug test. Again, mixed responses. It sounds like it could vary depending on the store, and perhaps the prevalence of drug use in that area?
  • Does Walmart drug test in Michigan: We called a few stores and tried getting through to the various departments. Again, the answers were a bit mixed, but more often than not the answer was they don’t drug test, unless you are going to be operating heavy equipment or working with ‘asset protection’ (I hadn’t heard the latter one mentioned before, but it makes sense: if you are going to be working in any department where the consequences of making an error could be severe, then you could expect to be drug tested).
  • Does Walmart drug test in Florida: Similar to the above, applications for entry level positions (clerks, cashiers, etc.) do not require drug testing. The women I spoke at the Orlando location to did confirm that pharmacy staff are drug tested however.

Did you know

Did you know it can take days to weeks for certain drugs to clear your system?

Here’s a general ranking on the average time they can be detected in the body:

  1.  Marijuana (THC): can be detected in urine for up to 30 days.
  2.  Methamphetamine: can be detected for up to a week.
  3.  Cocaine: can typically be detected in urine for 2-4 days after use. However, heavy use or chronic use may result in detection for a longer period, up to a week.
  4.  Opiates (Heroin, Morphine, Codeine): Opiates are generally detectable in urine for 2-3 days. However, some opiates like methadone may be detectable for longer periods.

Canada

All representatives from Walmart stores in Canada informed me that:

  • They were not aware of any ongoing drug test requirements for NEW hired nor active employees; or
  • They were not 100% sure, but confirmed that they were not drug tested themselves at any point when they got hired on.
  • The Walmart stores we called ranged from west coast (those in British Columbia and Alberta) to east coast (Ontario).

Some additional information for you consideration based on my additional digging:

  1. Random Drug Testing: Ok, so this one is obvious. It does happen, but generally only under suspicion. That said, the chances of this increase in safety-sensitive positions (like drivers and equipment operators, as eluded to above). Frequency and scope can vary.
  2. Post-Accident Testing: The title is pretty self explanatory, but expect the chances of a drug test to increase after any workplace accidents or incidents.
  3. Return-to-Work Testing: If an employee is involved in a workplace accident or violates the company’s drug and alcohol policy, they might need to undergo drug testing before being allowed to return to work.
  4. Cannabis Policy: Some sources indicated that Walmart, like many companies, had been adjusting its policies around cannabis use due to changing laws and attitudes. In locations where cannabis is legal, Walmart might have modified its testing policies regarding marijuana. Here is the latest on state-level legality of weed / marijuana, to possibly give you a better sense of this. But regardless of whether marijuana is legal in your province or state, you should never be high / intoxicated on the job.
  5. Third-Party Testing: Walmart typically contracts with third-party vendors to conduct drug tests. These vendors follow established guidelines and procedures to ensure accuracy and fairness.

Alright, so these of course are generalities, so it’s important to note that drug testing policies can vary by country, region, specific job roles within the company, and even whether you live in a “blue” or “red” state.

For the most accurate and up-to-date information, I recommend checking Walmart’s official website and any recently published employee handbooks or policy documents.
